About the position

The Overnight Hospital Treatment Technician is responsible for providing all manner of care to our equine hospital patients throughout the night. The applicant should have a good understanding of horse terminology and experience handling horses of all ages. Overnight care encompasses all aspects of treatment including medication preparation and administration, fluid administration, feeding, foal handling (during foaling season) and emergency treatments for critical care patients.

Responsibilities

  • Provide general patient care including preparing and administering oral and IV medications, performing physical exams, placing IV catheters, preparing and monitoring fluid administration, feeding, preparing stalls, turning out and bringing in and assisting with diagnostic procedures.
  • Communicate patient updates with veterinarians and other hospital staff.
  • Maintain accurate medical records including treatment notes and billing.
  • Process bloodwork for emergency patients and inpatients.
  • Assist with Emergency admissions, as needed.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation for primary and secondary on call technicians.
  • Additional responsibilities as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum one year working as a technician in an equine hospital or as a mobile equine veterinary technician strongly preferred but willing to train individual with other strong horse related experience.
  • Exceptional horse-horse handling skills of all ages and types of horses, required (newborn foals through seniors).
  • Post high-school education in equine studies or similar field, preferred.
  • Veterinary technician license, preferred.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex concepts.
  • Must be willing to work independently as well as contribute to a team.
  • Excellent work ethic and a strong willingness to learn.
  • Good time management and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions.
  • Confident and capable of handling emergency situations.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
