About the position

This position is located at the Barksdale AFB Veterinary Treatment Facility. The role involves serving as the clinic Veterinarian performing wellness appointments on privately-owned animals, advising owners on proper immunizations and disease prevention, examining animals, treating diseases and injuries, conducting surgeries, and performing administrative duties such as maintaining legal medical health records. The Veterinarian will also collect body tissue, feces, blood, urine, and other body fluids for examination and diagnostic testing, interpret laboratory findings, issue health certificates, and provide direction and oversight to Animal Health Assistants regarding veterinary nursing skills and animal care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform wellness appointments on privately-owned animals.
  • Advise owners on proper immunizations and disease prevention.
  • Examine animals and treat diseases and injuries.
  • Conduct surgeries.
  • Maintain legal medical health records.
  • Collect body tissue, feces, blood, urine, and other body fluids for examination and diagnostic testing.
  • Perform and interpret laboratory findings.
  • Issue health certificates.
  • Provide direction and oversight to Animal Health Assistants.

Requirements

  • Possess a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited school.
  • Possess a valid unrestricted state license to practice veterinary medicine.
  • Ability to obtain/renew USDA/APHIS accreditation within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Ability to stand for long periods, restrain animals, kneel, reach, etc.
  • Must not have an aversion to animals, blood, bodily fluids, animal tissues, strong odors, needles, or sharp instruments.
  • Satisfactorily complete a physical examination prior to entrance on duty.
