About the position

The Veterinary Medical Officer (Import/Export) position at the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service involves overseeing the import and export of animals and animal products, ensuring compliance with health regulations. The role includes supervising staff, certifying international health certificates, diagnosing animal diseases, and providing guidance on import regulations. This position is critical for maintaining animal health standards and facilitating international trade in animal products.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise subordinates less than 25% of the time, including monitoring work, providing advice, evaluating performance, initiating awards, and authorizing leave approval.
  • Review, certify, and endorse eligible international health certificates and related documents for animals and animal products.
  • Develop and recommend new procedures for releasing, retaining, and quarantining problem animals or products.
  • Diagnose domestic and foreign animal diseases targeted for prevention, control, and eradication.
  • Review and analyze eligibility for the import of various animals and animal products.
  • Assist importers with the permit process and ensure compliance with import regulations.
  • Provide information and guidance to port veterinary medical officers to ensure consistent delivery of regulations and policies.
  • Review inspections and compliance agreements of establishments handling restricted imports.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary medical school.
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level, applying veterinary medical practices and knowledge of foreign animal diseases.
  • Ability to translate veterinary medical and regulatory information for various stakeholders.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in animal science, food safety, or public health related to veterinary medicine.
  • Completion of an internship, residency, or fellowship in a relevant discipline.
