About the position

The Veterinary Technician at The Animal Foundation is responsible for providing compassionate and humane medical care to animals in accordance with veterinary protocols. This role involves assisting in surgical procedures, administering medications, conducting health screenings, and ensuring the overall well-being of animals in the shelter. The technician will work under the supervision of veterinarians and is expected to perform various clinical tasks while adhering to state regulations and organizational protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the surgeon(s) with preoperative examinations.
  • Conduct and monitor the flow of surgery, ensuring proper anesthetic monitoring and surgical prepping.
  • Administer controlled drugs/substances to animals under veterinarian supervision.
  • Record and reconcile controlled drugs/substances daily according to state regulations.
  • Induce, monitor, and maintain stability of patients undergoing anesthesia/surgery under veterinarian direction.
  • Assist with emergencies during surgery and for animals housed at the foundation.
  • Prep animals for surgical procedures, including shaving and surgical scrubbing.
  • Monitor anesthesia during surgeries and assist surgeons with supply needs.
  • Perform surgical recovery tasks, including temperature regulation and incision care.
  • Intubate animals during surgical prepping and emergency procedures as required.
  • Microchip animals and administer rabies vaccines after training and under supervision.
  • Provide routine medical testing and preventative care as directed.
  • Administer prescribed medications to animals in accordance with protocols.
  • Perform health screening exams for shelter animals eligible for adoption.
  • Complete physical exams and vaccine administration for foster and partner animals.
  • Apply bandages and perform wound care as needed under supervision.
  • Assist in the Low Cost Vaccine Clinic by administering vaccines and microchips.
  • Enter accurate medical information into the Chameleon software program.
  • Wash and dry surgical laundry and maintain inventory of supplies.
  • Feed and water animals as directed and maintain animal husbandry standards.
  • Prevent disease spread by following proper cleaning protocols.
  • Provide information and assistance to internal and external customers as required.
  • Complete surgical discharges and provide post-operative care instructions to pet owners.
  • Answer clinic phone and check voicemail messages, making follow-up calls as needed.
  • Train new hires or volunteers as required.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a degree as a veterinary technician from an accredited college.
  • One year of experience in a veterinary clinic, hospital, or animal shelter.
  • Valid Nevada Veterinary Technician (VT) license or valid Nevada Veterinary Technician in Training (VTIT) license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Euthanasia technician credentials from the Nevada State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy.
