About the position

The Vice President of Compliance Monitoring & Testing at SMBC will lead a team focused on ensuring compliance with financial crime regulations, particularly BSA/AML and sanctions laws. This role involves overseeing monitoring and testing engagements to validate the effectiveness of internal controls within SMBC's U.S. operations. The Vice President will manage a small team, develop compliance schedules, and maintain communication with internal clients throughout the testing process.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Monitoring and Testing (M&T) activities for financial crime compliance risks.
  • Serve as the examiner-in-charge for compliance monitoring and testing engagements.
  • Manage the development and refinement of monitoring and testing scripts.
  • Plan engagements and prepare information requests and announcement memos for Compliance Reviews.
  • Oversee the execution of field work to validate internal controls' efficacy.
  • Maintain communication with internal clients during monitoring and testing engagements.
  • Ensure documentation of field work and vetting of issues before final reporting.
  • Draft and publish formal testing reports to management.
  • Track and validate identified issues and corrective action plans.
  • Stay updated on regulatory requirements and SMBC's business model.
  • Support consolidation and reporting of results within local and Head Office reporting.
  • Develop annual compliance monitoring and testing schedules with Compliance management.
  • Provide oversight of assigned M&T staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Advanced Degree and/or Certifications preferred.
  • At least 10 years of regulatory, compliance testing, audit, or risk management experience.
  • Financial services experience and knowledge of wholesale banking products preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. banking laws and regulations, especially BSA/AML and sanctions laws.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and reprioritize as needed.
  • Proven management skills and advocating staff development.
