About the position

The Vice President, Head of R D Legal for the Americas at Novartis is responsible for leading the legal support for the Biomedical Research organization across the region. This role involves managing a team of legal and administrative personnel, providing legal counsel on regulatory, transactional, and business matters, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and Novartis policies. The position requires collaboration with various legal teams and senior leaders to advance business priorities and streamline legal processes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of legal strategies for the Biomedical Research organization.
  • Provide legal leadership for regulatory, transactional, and business legal counseling.
  • Advise senior leaders on priority programs and strategies, identifying opportunities and solutions.
  • Collaborate with other legal teams to ensure seamless legal support.
  • Provide legal counsel for clinical trials, including informed consent and site selection.
  • Advise on regulatory issues and develop policy shaping strategies.
  • Support 3rd party relationships and negotiate clinical procurement agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with laws and regulations, advising on compliance issues.
  • Lead, develop, and manage the R D Legal, Americas team, promoting collaboration and best practices.
  • Contribute to the R D Legal Leadership Team and lead projects as required.

Requirements

  • Law degree and bar admission required.
  • At least 15 years' post bar admission experience in life sciences or pharmaceutical environment.
  • Experience managing a team of attorneys and supporting their professional development.
  • At least 10 years advising on research and drug development programs.
  • Legal experience supporting outsourced trials and complex contracting negotiations.
  • Demonstrated success in cross-functional organizational process improvements.
  • Experience advising on regulatory, legal compliance, and risk management issues.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues and provide pragmatic solutions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with high influencing ability.
  • Experience handling multiple complex projects simultaneously.

Nice-to-haves

  • A science background is preferred but not required.
