About the position

The Books and Records Oversight team within Markets Operations aims to enhance the discipline and control framework for accounting practices. This newly formed team is responsible for driving remediation efforts and ensuring strong accounting practices are adopted across the organization. The role involves leading engagement with the Finance department and participating in firm-wide forums on accounting matters, while also developing quality control measures for balance sheet substantiation and promoting accounting knowledge within Markets Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the implementation of metrics and controls within line Operations teams.
  • Collaborate with Finance colleagues to ensure complete balance sheet proofing and effective control design.
  • Educate the Markets Ops team on accounting practices and the relationship between cash movement and accounting records.
  • Partner with Business and Transformation teams on new initiatives to ensure robust financial controls are in place.
  • Coordinate account owner activities across Markets Operations, including maintaining the Operations chart of accounts.
  • Establish a framework for consistent roles and responsibilities regarding account control and reconciliations.
  • Work with global functional managers to address exceptions and breaks, ensuring timely escalation and root cause resolution.
  • Define and document processes for reserve calculations across Markets Operations.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce aged exceptions and improve reserve management.
  • Ensure standardization in account proofing processes and drive efficiencies through centralization where applicable.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Operations Risk & Control to ensure compliance with policies and standards.
  • Support accurate and timely exceptions reporting in partnership with Balance Sheet Control and risk reporting.
  • Engage with Front office to ensure upstream data and processes are robust to prevent downstream issues.
  • Promote consistency and common standards with Centralized Operations counterparts.
  • Develop a standard mechanism for accruing and managing interest payments between internal desks/accounts.
  • Implement best practices for reconciliations to ensure compliance with standards and controls.
  • Foster the development and retention of subject matter experts in account and reconciliation processes.
  • Strengthen issue management processes and ensure timely escalation of emerging risks.
  • Lead Markets Operations' involvement in firm-wide accounting programs and represent the team at governance forums.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of relevant experience in financial accounting and operational aspects of books and records management.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to operate as a leader and mentor.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with active listening abilities.
  • Ability to assess and respond to challenges with creative solutions.
  • Demonstrated capability to make sound judgment calls on quantitative and qualitative issues.
  • Experience in developing medium and long-term plans and strategies.
  • Authority to negotiate and make independent decisions on critical activities.
