About the position

The Vice President of Communications, Marketing & Business Development at the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center (IHMEC) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the museum's impact as a thought leader in Holocaust and genocide memory and education. This position is responsible for developing and executing strategic communications and marketing plans that align with the museum's long-term goals. The VP will collaborate with program and executive leadership to ensure that the museum's vision and mission are effectively communicated and represented across various platforms. In addition to strategic oversight, the VP will lead efforts to expand the museum's brand and reputation both locally and nationally. This includes increasing outreach to attract more visitors and members, as well as identifying new revenue opportunities through admissions, memberships, and facility rentals. The role requires a strong focus on building relationships with media and community partners to enhance visibility and engagement with the museum's mission. The VP will also manage a team, guiding and supporting staff in achieving organizational goals while fostering professional development. This leadership role involves advising the Board of Directors and representing the museum in the community, ensuring that IHMEC's mission is effectively communicated and upheld. The position requires a blend of strategic thinking, creativity, and strong communication skills to drive the museum's marketing and business development initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute annual strategic communications and marketing plans.
  • Collaborate with program and executive leadership to align the organization's vision and mission.
  • Position the Museum as a thought leader through various communication channels.
  • Advance the visibility and public presence of IHMEC through innovative approaches and partnerships.
  • Manage and support department staff on objectives and professional development.
  • Develop strategies to enhance the visitor experience and service orientation.
  • Manage vendor relationships, including PR and marketing firms.
  • Provide leadership and support to the Board of Directors and committees.
  • Advise leaders on reputational and strategic communications matters.
  • Represent IHMEC as a brand ambassador in the community.

Requirements

  • Degree in Communications, Marketing or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in communications and marketing, ideally in a nonprofit environment.
  • Experience in communications, media relations, advertising, and digital/social media.
  • Experience in business development and earned revenue management.
  • Experience in brand positioning and thought leadership.
  • Experience in leading and managing teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in nonprofit fundraising and grant writing.
  • Familiarity with Holocaust education and advocacy.
  • Proficiency in multiple languages.
