About the position

The Vice President of Development and External Affairs (VP-DEA) at Historic New England is a senior leadership role responsible for advancing the organization's strategic vision through comprehensive fundraising, marketing, communications, and membership activities. The VP-DEA will lead efforts to cultivate donor relationships, oversee major gifts and campaigns, and enhance the organization's public engagement, particularly through a significant revitalization initiative in Haverhill, Massachusetts. This position requires a collaborative leader with a proven track record in development and communications, capable of mentoring teams and driving growth in membership and fundraising efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Historic New England's fundraising, marketing, and membership activities.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward current and new donors throughout New England and beyond.
  • Foster effective communication strategies and support a comprehensive membership program.
  • Oversee the annual and major gifts program, institutional and foundational support, cultivation events, and capital campaigns.
  • Support the organization's strategic plan across diverse audiences and platforms.
  • Act as a visible ambassador for the organization at every opportunity.
  • Participate in planning and execution of a major revitalization initiative in Haverhill.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent combination of skilled credentials.
  • Minimum ten years of leadership-level development and communications experience.
  • Proven experience in relationship management with success in soliciting gifts of $10,000 and above.
  • Strong background in development, marketing, and communications with increasing responsibility.
  • Record of successful marketing and membership campaigns across diverse platforms and audiences.
  • Understanding of a broad range of fundraising activities, including donor prospecting, annual giving, major gifts, grants, and capital campaigns.
  • Exceptional presentation and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent project management, supervisory, and budgeting skills.
