About the position

The Vice President of Facilities, Design, and Operations and University Architect at the University of Notre Dame is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic planning, design, and operational management of the university's facilities. This position advocates for the campus's architectural integrity and sustainability while overseeing a diverse team dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the university's historic campus. The role emphasizes collaboration with university leaders to ensure that facilities meet the evolving needs of the community and align with the university's mission and values.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement long-term strategies for campus growth guided by the Campus Plan.
  • Oversee the design and execution of new building and renovation projects as the University Architect.
  • Lead efforts in advancing sustainable design and operations, focusing on energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.
  • Ensure exceptional performance in safety, maintenance, utilities services, landscape care, and housekeeping for campus facilities.
  • Collaborate with academic, administrative, and student leaders to foster accessibility and engagement in campus spaces.
  • Direct the planning and execution of all facility improvement projects, ensuring they are on-time and cost-efficient.
  • Cultivate a culture of creativity, accountability, and professional growth among the Facilities Design and Operations staff.
  • Plan and execute a renewal program for campus buildings and infrastructure to prevent deferred maintenance.

Requirements

  • Minimum 15 years of progressively responsible experience in facilities design, architecture, operations, and capital project management, preferably in higher education.
  • A Bachelor's degree and formal architectural training are required, with a strong preference for candidates who hold licensure as a registered architect.
  • Demonstrated ability to envision and implement a comprehensive campus planning strategy that integrates sustainability, innovation, and aesthetic excellence.
  • Ability to create a high performing team and invest in their growth.
  • Passion for and experience in implementing sustainable building practices and operational efficiency.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills with a track record of successful collaboration across diverse teams.
