About the position

The Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Sweet Briar College is responsible for overseeing the strategic financial management of the institution. This role involves managing finance and budget operations, business office functions, purchasing, human resources, and financial aid. The CFO collaborates with various departments and external bodies to ensure the financial integrity and compliance of the College while providing leadership and innovative solutions to enhance financial services and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as chief financial officer of the College.
  • Exercise primary stewardship of College resources, ensuring fiscal soundness and compliance with regulations.
  • Provide vision and leadership for business office activities, including accounting, payroll, and purchasing.
  • Organize and supervise the development of the College's budget, ensuring fiscal integrity.
  • Oversee risk management and insurance programs for the College.
  • Promote budget literacy and collaborate with departments on budget-related decision making.
  • Evaluate budget needs and requests while ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare detailed reports on various management topics as needed.
  • Manage cash flow and ensure compliance with financial regulatory agencies.
  • Serve as chief financial advisor to the President and the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Review and advise on contractual matters and funding streams.
  • Prepare and present financial statements and reports related to financial oversight.
  • Ensure finance-related policies meet audit standards and manage annual reviews.
  • Direct financial control activities to ensure soundness of financial processes.
  • Manage financial reconciliation for financial aid compliance.
  • Administer institutional programs with revenue streams efficiently.
  • Oversee endowment and investment programs for institutional and scholarship funds.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or related fields.
  • Chartered Accountant, MBA, CFA, or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum five years of experience in finance administration and leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and governing boards.
  • Experience with operational and strategic planning, policy development, and financial analysis.
  • Effective communication skills in written and oral formats.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in college administration and familiarity with college applications.
  • Previous experience with Banner and other college data management systems.
  • Earned Master's Degree.
