About the position

The Vice President of Planning and Chief of Staff at Colorado Mountain College is a pivotal role that encompasses a wide range of responsibilities aimed at enhancing the operational efficiency and strategic direction of the college. This position is primarily focused on managing the Department of Strategic Initiatives, which includes overseeing various externally funded programs and grants development. The incumbent will work closely with the college president to supervise the college's legislative liaison and strategy-focused contractors, ensuring that the college's legislative and government relations efforts are effectively coordinated. This includes staffing the Board's government relations committee and maintaining timely communications with various stakeholders, including state and federal agencies, the Board of Trustees, and executive advisory boards. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the Vice President will oversee the daily operations of the President's office, ensuring that all activities are conducted efficiently and effectively. This includes managing the President's schedule, correspondence, and communication, as well as leading special projects and initiatives as directed by the President. The role also involves preparing agendas and assembling materials for Board meetings and special events, as well as developing quarterly and annual reports on assigned projects and initiatives. The Vice President will contribute to equity initiatives and employee appreciation practices, while also identifying and resolving issues that may impact the institution. As a key advisor to the president, the Vice President will provide insights and recommendations on institutional matters, preparing briefing materials and reports as necessary. The role requires the development of strong relationships with key community groups and stakeholders, facilitating communication and collaboration among various parties. The Vice President will also coordinate strategic engagement efforts on behalf of the President's Office, ensuring that internal and external audiences are effectively informed and engaged. This position requires a deep understanding of the college's mission and the ability to represent the President at various meetings and events.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Department of Strategic Initiatives, including externally funded programs and grants development.
  • Supervise the college's legislative liaison and strategy-focused contractors with the college president.
  • Oversee the Executive Communications and Special Projects Coordinator.
  • Coordinate the college's legislative and government relations efforts with the college president.
  • Supervise executive assistants in coordinating the president's calendar and communications.
  • Develop quarterly and annual reporting on assigned projects and initiatives.
  • Oversee daily operations of the President's office, managing the President's schedule and correspondence.
  • Lead and manage special projects and initiatives as directed by the President.
  • Coordinate and organize meetings of the Board of Trustees and special events.
  • Prepare agendas and materials for Board meetings and special events.
  • Manage cyclical practices considering fiscal and academic years.
  • Contribute to equity initiatives and employee appreciation practices.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve institutional issues and conflicts.
  • Serve as a key advisor to the president on institutional matters.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and community groups.
  • Coordinate strategic engagement efforts on behalf of the President's Office.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among stakeholders.
  • Represent and speak on behalf of the President at meetings.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in higher education administration, strategic planning, or related fields with progressive leadership responsibilities.
  • Advanced degree in higher education, business administration, public administration, or law is desirable.
  • Proven track record of managing complex projects and initiatives effectively.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the college's strategic principles, including equity, care, innovation, and integrity.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Sound professional judgment and commitment to ethical conduct and confidentiality.
  • Direct experience in public policy, legislative affairs, and organizational governance is preferred.
  • Understanding of the social, political, and financial environment surrounding Colorado Mountain College is desirable.
