About the position

The Vice President of Research at Texas Biomedical Research Institute is a senior executive role responsible for overseeing the institute's global research development. This position involves leading research functions from fundamental to preclinical research, focusing on infectious diseases, inflammation, and immunity, particularly in vulnerable populations. The VP/EVP will be a key member of the senior research leadership team, reporting directly to the CEO, and will manage a team of approximately 70 individuals across various scientific programs and administrative teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, organize and manage an advanced research organization aligned with Texas Biomed's mission, vision and values.
  • Foster and promote a culture of research integrity and responsibility, ensuring adherence to regulations and ethical standards.
  • Advise the President on research initiatives, policies, and operations as a member of the senior leadership team.
  • Provide leadership in reviews and assessments for large-scale research activities and inter-institutional agreements.
  • Work with the President to strengthen research within academic programs and develop strategic plans for research space.
  • Mentor and develop staff and faculty, establishing performance goals and conducting appraisals.
  • Consult with corporate attorneys on legal compliance issues as necessary.
  • Implement the vision, strategic plan, and policies to guide the Institute's research portfolio.
  • Develop and provide oversight of institutional cores, research programs, and compliance units.

Requirements

  • Doctoral Degree (e.g., Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., or equivalent) from an accredited college or university.
  • Ten or more years of job-specific experience in research leadership.
  • Academic credentials and experience that merit appointment at the rank of professor or equivalent.
  • Successful experience in administrative leadership in academia or a comparable position in a leading non-academic research institution.
  • Knowledge of research compliance, including human, animal, environmental, and biosafety requirements.
  • Ability to clear background checks and assume roles such as Institutional Official and Research Integrity Officer.
  • Experience working at the federal level on research initiatives and policies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in technology transfer and commercialization of research.
  • Familiarity with indirect cost rates and effort reporting.
