About the position

The Vice Provost and Chief of Staff for Academic Affairs at Spelman College is a senior leadership role that reports directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. This position is integral to the Division of Academic Affairs, focusing on advancing strategic initiatives, overseeing faculty affairs, and promoting a culture of equity and inclusion. The Vice Provost will work closely with the Provost to enhance faculty relations, develop academic policies, and ensure alignment with the college's mission and strategic goals, particularly in the context of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and women's education.

Responsibilities

  • Advance strategic initiatives in the Office of the Provost.
  • Provide leadership and strategic vision for faculty recruitment, retention, and advancement.
  • Develop and execute strategic academic plans that align with the institution's mission.
  • Oversee faculty affairs and related processes, including recruitment and retention policies.
  • Promote sustainability and innovation through partnerships and alliances.
  • Support daily operations of the Division of Academic Affairs and serve as a communication point for faculty.
  • Foster a culture of equity, honesty, transparency, and inclusion within the Office of the Provost.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to address faculty and staff concerns and grievances.
  • Review and revise college policies related to Academic Affairs.
  • Manage administrative tasks such as scheduling, correspondence, and meeting coordination.

Requirements

  • Ph.D., Ed.D., or relevant terminal academic degree from an accredited institution.
  • Ten or more years of progressive experience in higher education, with five years in an intermediate or senior administrative role.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaborative and transparent management practices.
  • Experience managing complex operational projects and strategic initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective organizational communication with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Skill in using data to track success and identify inequitable policies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Rank of full professor with tenure.
  • Experience with undergraduate curriculum and program review.
  • Demonstrated capacity for influential leadership and innovation.
  • Experience with programmatic budget oversight and strategic budget management.
