About the position

The Victim Advocate II position at the City Attorney's Office is designed to support victims of municipal crimes throughout the criminal justice process. The advocate will provide essential resources, referrals, and emotional support to victims of all ages, ensuring they are informed and assisted during their legal journey. This role emphasizes a victim-centered approach, collaboration with community organizations, and compliance with Denver's Victims' Rights Act.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to crisis calls and provide information on the criminal justice process.
  • Accompany victims to court and assist with obtaining protection orders.
  • Answer questions about court cases and offer safety planning.
  • Provide referrals to community resources and staff cases with the prosecutorial team.
  • Attend meetings with collaborative partners and represent the City Attorney's Office.
  • Contact crime victims to explain their rights and provide information about the criminal process.
  • Prepare victim impact statements and review police reports.
  • Assess risk factors and provide safety planning for victims.
  • Appear at trials and hearings to provide support to victims and witnesses.
  • Coordinate the appearance of victims and witnesses with courtroom schedules.
  • Maintain contact with victims to keep them updated on case status.
  • Assist victims with translator services, therapy referrals, and transportation arrangements.
  • Prepare necessary paperwork for court dispositions.
  • Explain victim compensation funds and restitution options available to victims.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice, or related field.
  • Four (4) years of paid or volunteer human services experience providing casework, case management, or trauma services to victims of violent or non-violent crimes.
  • Valid Driver's License at the time of application.

  • Experience working in a prosecutor's office.
  • Competent, confident, and professional demeanor in crisis situations.
  • Ability to handle emergency or crisis situations effectively.
