About the position

The Victim Advocate position at the Utah Department of Public Safety, State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is designed to support witnesses and victims of crime throughout the criminal justice process. This role involves providing on-scene assistance, crisis intervention, and information about rights and services available to victims and their families.

Responsibilities

  • Provide crisis intervention for witnesses and victims of crime
  • Provide victims and their families with information concerning rights, options, benefits, services, goals, and expectations
  • Conduct interviews to determine victim needs and evaluate to make appropriate referrals
  • Act as a facilitator in problem-solving situations
  • Provide information to those seeking assistance and suggest alternatives/solutions
  • Serve as liaison for victims with law enforcement and prosecutors
  • Manage grants and programs related to victim services (e.g., VOCA and VINE)
  • Deliver presentations to staff and the general public, and create marketing, promotional, or interpretive materials

Requirements

  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with people sensitively and professionally
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely
  • Ability to read and understand information presented in writing
  • Knowledge of applicable civil and criminal justice laws, rules, regulations, and/or policies and procedures
  • Ability to coordinate activities or tasks of people, groups, and/or organizations and deliver presentations or training using acceptable methods and techniques
  • Willingness to travel throughout the state and work variable hours, including an on-call rotation
  • Residence within 50 miles of the Investigation Bureau Office (4501 South 2700 West, Taylorsville)

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Social or Behavioral Science or equivalent work-related experience
