About the position

The Victim Advocate position is a civilian role within the Police Department focused on providing support and assistance to victims of crimes. The advocate will offer emotional support, explain victim rights, and guide individuals through the legal processes while collaborating with various community and law enforcement agencies. The role emphasizes teamwork, excellent customer service, and a commitment to making a positive impact in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Provide emotional support and crisis intervention to victims via phone and/or in-person.
  • Explain information related to victim rights, criminal justice systems, and community resources.
  • Aide victims in safety planning.
  • Guide victims through the legal and/or court processes.
  • Work collaboratively with law enforcement, medical personnel, courts, and community agencies.
  • Train/educate staff and the public to raise awareness about victim rights, Victim Assistance Unit, and available services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (i.e. Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, or similar).
  • 6 months to 1 year of experience in a similar position.
