About the position

The Victim Advocate position at SLCPD involves assisting victims of violent crimes by providing essential information, resources, and support. The role requires strong communication skills and the ability to work independently while liaising with law enforcement, prosecutors, and other agencies. The position is full-time, with a structured schedule of either four 10-hour shifts or five 8-hour shifts, and is dedicated to helping victims navigate their challenges and access necessary services.

Responsibilities

  • Provides crisis interventions for victims of violent crimes.
  • Conducts needs assessments through client intake documentation and interviews.
  • Evaluates needs and makes appropriate referrals for counseling, housing, shelter, legal assistance, and other services.
  • Assists victims in obtaining protective orders.
  • Helps in filing victim reparation forms, victim/witness statements, medical release forms, and other documentation pertinent to their case.
  • Provides transportation to and from court hearings, shelters, and other appropriate services when necessary.
  • Follows up on all assigned cases.
  • Reviews incident reports to determine advocacy needs.
  • Accesses court and police computer systems to research case histories and police-related activity.
  • Meets regularly with the Victim Advocate Team to discuss cases and develop action plans.
  • Attends court proceedings to support victims and informs them of court dates and changes.
  • Serves as a liaison for victims with law enforcement and prosecutors.
  • Coordinates efforts with other victim services providers and agencies.
  • Manages assigned cases, including documentation and statistical data.
  • May act as a trainer and attend relevant conferences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in social or behavioral sciences and one year of related work experience, or an associate degree in the same field with three years of related work experience.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to work with individuals in crisis situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of victimology, trauma-informed responses, judicial processes, and resources for victims of crimes.
  • Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

  • Competitive hourly wage ranging from $30.48 to $33.68, paid bi-weekly.
