About the position

The Victim Witness Advocate position is a grant-funded role focused on providing support and assistance to victims and witnesses of crime. The advocate will inform individuals of their rights, coordinate court appearances, and facilitate access to necessary services. This role requires effective communication and crisis intervention skills, as well as the ability to maintain confidentiality and build relationships with community resources.

Responsibilities

  • Inform victims and witnesses of their rights according to State statute.
  • Notify victims and witnesses of court proceedings and explain the legal process.
  • Coordinate court appearance dates and case status with crime victims.
  • Schedule pre-trial interviews and accompany victims to court hearings.
  • Interview and obtain necessary background information on crimes committed.
  • Refer victims and witnesses to appropriate agencies and assist in obtaining services.
  • Assist with locating victims and witnesses when subpoenas cannot be served.
  • Assist with education and applications for entitled victim compensation programs.
  • Document services provided by writing progress reports and completing other documentation.
  • Provide crisis intervention to victims and witnesses of crime.
  • Develop and maintain office filing and records systems.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with community resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in criminal justice, sociology, or related field.
  • Considerable experience in social work or in the criminal justice system, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • General knowledge of interviewing techniques and human behavior.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare concise written reports.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in crisis intervention and counseling techniques.
  • Familiarity with the criminal justice system and victim services.
