About the position

The Victim/Witness Advocate position is responsible for providing a wide range of direct services to victims, witnesses, and their families involved in the criminal justice system. This role involves both paraprofessional and administrative duties, aimed at supporting individuals affected by crime. The position requires a strong understanding of victimization dynamics and the ability to assist victims in navigating the complexities of the criminal justice process. Bilingual candidates, particularly those fluent in English and Spanish, are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to victims' immediate needs in person or by telephone, providing emergency assistance as necessary.
  • Refers victims of domestic violence to temporary safe living environments during emergencies.
  • Contacts victims to assist with financial losses resulting from crimes, including claims with the Victims of Crime Program.
  • Refers victims to appropriate agencies for medical or therapeutic treatment and other services.
  • Assists law enforcement and the District Attorney's Office in interviewing crime victims, providing emotional support and resources.
  • Arranges transportation for victims and witnesses, coordinates excused absences from employment, and arranges lodging and accommodations.
  • Helps obtain the return of victims' property held as evidence.
  • Provides information to victims and witnesses about the criminal justice system and case status.
  • Offers assistance, escort, and support to victims and witnesses for court appearances and interviews.
  • Notifies families and friends about the status and condition of crime victims.
  • Intercedes on behalf of victims with creditors and service providers regarding financial obligations and claims.
  • Assists with temporary child care arrangements for victims or witnesses involved in the criminal justice process.
  • Delivers crime prevention information through brochures, counseling, and public presentations.
  • Aids victims and witnesses in completing necessary forms for obtaining restraining orders.
  • Develops strong liaisons with law enforcement and human service agencies to enhance service delivery to victims.
  • Advocates for victims' rights in interactions with criminal justice representatives and community organizations.
  • Notifies witnesses of cancellations or changes in court appearances.
  • Assists deceased victims' families with funeral arrangements.
  • Coordinates Sexual Assault Response Team activities, scheduling exams, and chairing meetings as needed.
  • Maintains records and prepares various documents, including memorandums and reports.
  • Reads and reviews crime reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college in criminal justice, behavioral science, social science, or a related field.
  • Two years of experience providing supportive counseling to victims and witnesses of crime, or related work in a criminal justice agency.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Successful completion of Entry Level Advocate Training within one year of hiring.

  • Salary range of $46,384.00 - $56,368.00 annually.
