About the position

The Victim/Witness Advocate plays a crucial role in supporting victims and witnesses involved in criminal cases. This position is responsible for coordinating court appearances, providing information about the criminal justice process, and assisting victims with various needs, including crisis intervention and access to community resources. The advocate works closely with the Prosecuting Attorney's Office to ensure that victims are informed and supported throughout the legal proceedings.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate court appearances for victims and witnesses for the Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
  • Keep victims and witnesses informed about case status and the criminal justice process.
  • Attend court hearings and assist victims during the proceedings.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support to victims and their families.
  • Assist with victim compensation applications and travel arrangements when necessary.
  • Compile data for reports and maintain communication with victims and witnesses.
  • Act as a liaison between victims and other criminal justice agencies.
  • Provide information and referrals to community services and resources as needed.
  • Assist with the completion of Victim Impact Statements and Restitution forms.
  • Organize victims and witnesses for testimony and provide court orientation.

Requirements

  • Possession of an Associate's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice or related field.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in a Prosecutor's Office or the criminal justice system working with victims of crime.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Michigan Court System and Michigan Laws.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and provide culturally sensitive services.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and standard office equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with crisis intervention and trauma-informed care.
  • Knowledge of community services and resources available to victims.
  • Familiarity with the Michigan Victim Information and Notification Everyday (MI-VINE) system.
