About the position

The Video Editor, Creative Studio position at ESPN is designed for individuals with advanced skills in non-linear video editing, particularly in a fast-paced sports news environment. This role requires effective collaboration across various editing areas and partnerships to support the creative process while maintaining a high standard of editing. The Video Editor will be instrumental in developing personnel, projects, and individual skill sets that will propel the Edit and Creative Studio into the future. ESPN Creative Studio is a dynamic unit within the Content division, comprising various roles including Motion Graphics, Edit, Visual Storytelling, Production Enhancements, and more. The team is responsible for conceptualizing, developing, and executing content creation across all ESPN distribution platforms, both domestic and international. In this role, the Video Editor will exhibit advanced skills in assembling and creating content using non-linear editing software. The position demands strong editing skills, effective communication, and the ability to perform well under pressure, adhering to strict timelines and live conditions with minimal supervision. The Video Editor will ensure that all created content meets ESPN's high standards for video and audio quality, conducting quality control measures and corrective actions to enhance video content. A strong knowledge of edit workflow, software, and facility layout is essential, as is the ability to maintain organization of media and adhere to naming conventions. The Video Editor will also be responsible for establishing strong relationships with partners, understanding their impact on Creative Studio, and providing excellent service to all collaborative partners. Training less experienced editors on workflows and software is a key responsibility, along with providing feedback in training initiatives and project contributions. Staying updated on industry technology and establishing new workflows to create accurate results is crucial. The role requires the ability to identify and escalate issues quickly, recommend solutions, and resolve operational errors and equipment failures. Additionally, the Video Editor will self-initiate creative projects and pitch ideas that align with departmental objectives, demonstrating a strong understanding of multiple file-based formats and providing file-based ingest support.

Responsibilities

  • Exhibit advanced skill to assemble and create content using non-linear editing software in a fast-paced sports news environment.
  • Ensure all created content meets ESPN's high standards for video and audio quality.
  • Conduct quality control measures and corrective actions to enhance video content.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of edit workflow, software, and facility layout in assigned areas.
  • Adhere to established organization of media and naming conventions.
  • Establish strong relationships and gain knowledge of partners, including their impact on Creative Studio.
  • Provide strong service to all collaborative partners.
  • Train less experienced editors on edit workflows and software.
  • Write and provide feedback in training initiatives and project contributions.
  • Stay updated on industry technology and help establish new workflows for accurate results.
  • Identify and quickly escalate issues, recommending solutions and resolving operational errors and equipment failures.
  • Provide strong multi-directional communication to ensure success of assignments and accomplishments.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 4 years of editing or related experience.
  • Advanced understanding of non-linear editing software (Adobe Premiere, Avid, Grass Valley Edius, or Qube).
  • Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (After Effects, Audition, Illustrator, Photoshop).
  • Skilled in media transfer workflows (ingest/publish/export).
  • Strong understanding of audio and video broadcast quality control (video scopes, audio levels, CALM Act compliance).
  • Ability to collaborate and work in a quick turn-around, sports newsroom environment.
  • Good computer background (Microsoft Office, Slack, Workfront).
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Flexibility to work overtime and alter shifts/days off to accommodate projects and departmental objectives.

Nice-to-haves

  • In-depth background in non-linear editing in areas including Adobe (Premiere, AE, Audition), Grass Valley, Edius.
  • Strong understanding of linear, non-linear, and social media production workflows.
  • Knowledge of PC or Mac operating systems.
  • Bilingual (written and spoken) in both English and Spanish.
