About the position

The Video Editor position at the University of Utah involves producing and editing video lectures and additional content for the Online Programs in the David Eccles School of Business. The role requires collaboration with a team to convert in-class education into an engaging online learning experience. The successful candidate will be responsible for conceptualizing, storyboarding, capturing videography, selecting music tracks, and editing videos for use in online classes. This position demands a forward-thinking and creative individual who can work independently or in concert with teammates based on the assignment's needs. In addition to video production, the Video Editor will support the Media Production Manager in securing locations, obtaining appearance releases, and managing other logistics as needed. The role includes shooting and editing videos, creating motion graphics, animations, and special effects under the guidance of the Media Production Manager. The candidate must also understand and implement audio mixing, music mixing, and sound effects, as well as provide color correction for all video content. The Video Editor will be responsible for executing compression and encoding of video content for online use and may need to research stock footage and stock photo elements as required. The position also involves maintaining a consistent video library and uploading finished projects to media channels with appropriate captioning. Staying updated on Web Content Accessibility Guidelines as they apply to videography and multimedia assets is crucial. The Video Editor will train and mentor student employees, ensuring the quality of their work, and collaborate with faculty and university partners in creative concept development and brainstorming for visual content. The role requires keeping abreast of new creative executions, developments, and technology in the multimedia field, reporting to supervisors for editing assignments, and completing video modules and editing tasks in a timely manner. The Video Editor may also serve as the point of contact for video recording, which includes studio setup, camera operation, live-editing management, and interaction with Eccles School faculty. Additional opportunities may arise due to the growth of Online Programs, including assistance with in-class recordings, marketing material development, and quality control.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize, storyboard, and collaborate on video projects.
  • Capture videography and select music tracks for online classes.
  • Edit video content for use in online education.
  • Support the Media Production Manager in securing locations and managing logistics.

  • Execute compression and encoding of video content for online use.

  • Train and mentor student employees in video production.
  • Collaborate with faculty and university partners on visual content development.
  • Report to supervisors for editing assignments and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Set up studio, operate cameras, and manage live-editing during recordings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Film, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Two years of demonstrated professional experience in digital/non-linear editing systems.
  • Experience with graphics/VFX software and familiarity with CODECs and compression basics.
  • Familiarity with television video and audio production, including field and studio applications.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and make creative decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills to meet deadlines while ensuring high technical and aesthetic standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated record of producing agency-quality visual content via an online portfolio.
  • Advanced experience with Adobe Creative Suite, especially After Effects, Premiere, Lightroom, and Photoshop.
  • Experience managing multiple projects with tight deadlines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and improve procedures with limited supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a record of collaboration and teamwork.
  • Experience in animation is a plus.
