About the position

The Video Editor, Creative Studio position at ESPN is designed for individuals with advanced skills in non-linear video editing, particularly in a fast-paced sports news environment. This role requires effective collaboration across various editing areas and partnerships to support the creative process while maintaining a high standard of editing. The Video Editor will be instrumental in developing personnel, projects, and individual skillsets that will propel the Edit and Creative Studio into the future. ESPN Creative Studio is a vital unit within the Content division of ESPN, comprising a diverse team that includes Motion Graphics, Edit, Visual Storytelling, Production Enhancements, Innovations, Creative Operations, and the Music group. The team is responsible for conceptualizing, developing, and executing content creation across all domestic and international ESPN distribution platforms. The Video Editor will play a key role in this dynamic environment, ensuring that all content meets ESPN's high standards for video and audio quality while adhering to established media organization and naming conventions. In this role, the Video Editor will also be responsible for training less experienced editors, providing feedback on training initiatives, and keeping abreast of industry technology to establish new workflows. The position demands strong organizational, creative, communication, and planning skills to ensure collaborative success within the team. The Video Editor will be expected to self-initiate creative projects and pitch ideas that align with departmental objectives, all while maintaining a strong understanding of file-based formats and providing necessary support for file-based ingest.

Responsibilities

  • Exhibits advanced skill to assemble and create content using non-linear editing software in a fast-paced sport news environment.
  • Ensure all created content meets ESPN's high standards for video and audio quality.
  • Conduct quality control measuring and corrective action steps to enhance video content.
  • Demonstrates a strong knowledge of edit workflow, software, and facility layout in assigned areas.
  • Responsible for adhering to established organization of media and naming conventions.
  • Establish strong relationships and gain knowledge of partners and their integration with Creative Studio.
  • Provides strong service to all collaborative partners.
  • Train less experienced editors on edit workflows and software.
  • Write and provide feedback in training initiatives and project contributions.
  • Keep updated on knowledge of industry technology and help establish new workflows.
  • Identify and quickly escalate issues, recommending solutions and resolving operational errors.
  • Provide strong multi-directional communication to ensure success of assignments.
  • Self-initiate creative projects and pitch ideas towards departmental objectives.
  • Strong understanding of multiple file-based formats and provide file-based ingest support.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 4 years of editing or related experience.
  • Advanced understanding of non-linear editing software (Adobe Premiere, Avid, Grass Valley Edius or Qube, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (After Effects, Audition, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.).
  • Skilled in media transfer workflows (ingest/publish/export).
  • Strong understanding of audio and video broadcast quality control (video scopes, audio levels, CALM Act compliance, etc.).
  • Ability to collaborate and work in a quick turn-around, sport newsroom environment.
  • Good computer background (Microsoft Office, Slack, Workfront, etc.).
  • Demonstrates strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Flexibility to work overtime and alter shifts/days off to accommodate projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • In-depth background in non-linear editing in Adobe (Premiere, AE, Audition, etc.) and Grass Valley, Edius, etc.
  • Strong understanding of linear, non-linear, social media production workflows.
  • Knowledge of PC or Mac operating system.
  • Bilingual (written and spoken) in both English and Spanish.
