About the position

The Video/Film Editor position at the University of Utah involves producing and editing video lectures and additional content for Online Programs in the David Eccles School of Business. The role requires a creative individual who can conceptualize, storyboard, and collaborate with a team to convert in-class lectures into engaging online learning experiences. The successful candidate will be responsible for capturing videography, selecting music tracks, and editing video content for use in online classes. This position is essential, requiring the employee to be on campus in person, and may involve regular office hours, evening, and some weekend hours, with remote work as necessary. In this role, the Video/Film Editor will support the Media Production Manager in securing locations, obtaining appearance releases, and managing logistics for video shoots. The editor will shoot and edit videos, create motion graphics, and implement audio mixing and sound effects. Color correction and encoding of video content for online use are also key responsibilities. The editor will maintain a consistent video library, upload finished projects to media channels with captioning, and stay updated on Web Content Accessibility Guidelines as they apply to videography and multimedia assets. Additionally, the Video/Film Editor will train and mentor student employees, ensuring the quality of their work, and collaborate with faculty and university partners in creative concept development. The role requires keeping abreast of new developments in the multimedia field and completing video modules and editing tasks in a timely manner. The position may also involve assisting with in-class recordings, marketing material development, and quality control as the Online Programs grow.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize, storyboard, and collaborate on video projects for online classes.
  • Capture videography and select music tracks for video content.
  • Edit video content and create motion graphics, animations, and special effects.
  • Implement audio mixing, music mixing, and sound effects for video projects.
  • Provide color correction for all video content and encode video for online use.
  • Research stock footage and stock photo elements as needed.
  • Maintain a consistent video library and upload finished projects to media channels with captioning.
  • Stay updated on Web Content Accessibility Guidelines as they apply to videography.
  • Train and mentor student employees, ensuring quality of their work.
  • Collaborate with faculty and university partners in creative concept development.
  • Keep abreast of new creative executions and technology in the multimedia field.
  • Complete video modules and editing tasks in a timely manner.
  • Serve as point of contact for video recording, including studio setup and camera operation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Film, or a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • Two years of demonstrated professional experience in the operation of digital/non-linear editing systems.
  • Experience with graphics/VFX software and familiarity with CODECs and compression basics.
  • Familiarity with all aspects of television video and audio production, including field and studio applications.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and make creative decisions while maintaining high technical and aesthetic standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated record of producing agency-quality, published visual content via an online portfolio.
  • Advanced experience using Adobe Creative Suite products, especially After Effects, Premiere, Lightroom, and Photoshop.
  • Substantial experience managing multiple projects with tight deadlines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, solve problems, and improve processes with limited supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a record of collaboration and teamwork.
  • Experience in animation is a plus.
