About the position

The Advancement Division's Digital Media team at Northeastern University is dedicated to creating original content that enhances the connection between the university and its donor and prospect audience, which includes alumni, parents, partners, and friends. The Videographer / Production Specialist plays a crucial role in this mission by serving as a creative catalyst for philanthropy. This position is responsible for producing powerful visual stories that not only elicit positive emotional responses but also inspire action, communicate the impact of donations, and express gratitude towards supporters. In this role, the incumbent will be expected to demonstrate both creative and technical proficiency in various production techniques, including lighting, camera operation, and sound recording. The position requires a strong foundation in video editing and color grading, particularly within the Adobe Creative Cloud environment. Experience in video editing and agency work is highly desirable, while skills in photography or motion graphics editing will be considered a plus. The ability to write effectively is also essential, as the role involves crafting concept briefs, interview questions, and informative captions. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and excellent organizational and time management skills are critical, especially when prioritizing assignments under tight deadlines. Project management experience is a must, and a personable approach coupled with a high degree of professionalism is necessary for success in this position. A Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in TV/Radio/Film Art/Design, Communications, Journalism, or a related field, along with two years of experience producing documentary or promotional video, is typically required for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Compose and capture visual content as the lead cinematographer that connects with the Advancement Division's primary constituents.
  • Apply cinematography, camera operation, and recording technology in both field and studio settings.
  • Organize, maintain, and prepare production equipment; research new production technology and make recommendations for purchases; coordinate equipment rentals.
  • Manage media assets to ensure secure sharing and storage.
  • Coordinate and manage pre-production, production, and post-production resources, including estimates, budgets, and shoot schedules, involving student and freelance production crews as needed.
  • Devise and produce creative materials that align with departmental goals and can be utilized by fundraisers, Alumni Relations, and Annual Giving.
  • Communicate production ideas and plans through concept briefs, storyboards, and scripts, and gain necessary approvals from stakeholders.
  • Find solutions to technical scheduling and creative challenges, ensuring projects are completed on-time and on-budget.
  • Support the Post-Production Specialist in importing and organizing media and editing, assisting with sound design, color grading, and graphic support as needed.
  • Act as lead photographer, capturing, editing, and curating digital still images for various needs such as professional headshots and event photography.
  • Design and implement engagement experiences that align with audience preferences and project objectives.
  • Research and recommend display technology for live events and online/mobile presentation platforms for digital consumption.
  • Optimize and curate existing video channels such as YouTube, Wistia, and Vimeo.

Requirements

  • Creative and technical proficiency in field and on-set production techniques (lighting, camera operation, sound recording).
  • Proficient in basic editing and color grading in an Adobe CC environment.
  • Video editing and agency experience are desired.
  • Photography or motion graphics editing experience is a plus.
  • Strong writing skills for crafting concept briefs, interview questions, and informative captions.
