About the position

The Akron Board of Education is seeking a Maintenance Helper to join the Facilities Services Department. This position is essential for maintaining the safety and functionality of school facilities. The Maintenance Helper will report directly to the Foreman and will be responsible for a variety of tasks that may include assisting skilled tradesmen in areas such as Audio-Visual, Painting, Carpentry, Hardware Repair, Plumbing, and Electrical work. The role requires a proactive approach to ensure the safety of students and the maintenance of a positive environment within the school. The Maintenance Helper will also be involved in maintaining accurate records, ordering supplies, and promoting good public relations through professional appearance and conduct. This position is part of the Collective Bargaining Unit - MOT and is classified under the School Employees Retirement System. The starting salary is to be determined based on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist skilled tradesmen in various maintenance tasks including Audio-Visual, Painting, Carpentry, Hardware Repair, Plumbing, and Electrical work.
  • Ensure the safety of students and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships with staff, students, parents, and other departments.
  • Learn the proper use and care of building maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Interact positively with staff, students, and the public in an official capacity when required.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by the department.
  • Assist with ordering needed building supplies and materials.
  • Promote good public relations through personal appearance, attitude, and conversation.
  • Respond to routine questions and requests appropriately.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Learn the operation and maintenance of equipment used in building maintenance.
  • Assist in the operation of bucket truck man-lift and scissor-lift as needed.
  • Attend meetings, seminars, and staff training and development as required.
  • Receive, store, and distribute maintenance materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Responsible for inspections, care, condition, appearance, repairs, and/or replacements of physical equipment, buildings, and facilities.
  • Assist in the development and operation of daily maintenance records and reports.
  • Perform any other duties as designated by superiors.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED.
  • Possess a valid State of Ohio Driver's License with less than 6 points.
  • A minimum of two (2) years' experience in building maintenance and/or repair.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in the installation of drywall/finishing and painting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Skill in the use of the tools, machinery, and equipment of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices and safety precautions of the painting trade.
