About the position

The Bridge Inspection Engineer conducts inspections of bridges and large culverts for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to ensure public safety and protect public investment. This role involves adhering to National Bridge Inspection Standards, evaluating material deterioration, and reporting findings. The position requires effective communication, critical thinking, and adaptability.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of bridges and large culverts to maintain public safety.
  • Assign ratings to bridge elements and report findings according to federal and state guidelines.
  • Organize and conduct engineering investigations and field observations.
  • Assist in project management and strategic planning for bridge inspection programs.
  • Analyze engineering data and develop technical guidelines and training materials.
  • Participate in Quality Control / Quality Assurance programs to ensure compliance with design criteria.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (civil engineering preferred) from an ABET accredited school.
  • Registered Professional Engineer license in Indiana or working towards it with an EIT certification.
  • At least four years of experience in engineering or transportation research.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Extensive knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices.
  • Ability to apply federal and state laws and regulations in engineering.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with bridge design software such as CONSPAN, RC-Pier, GEOMATH, and Merlin Dash.
  • Completion of National Highway Institute courses related to bridge inspection.
  • Familiarity with Indiana Design Manual and INDOT specifications.
