The Virtual Coder position at Memorial Healthcare System involves reviewing medical record documentation and assigning appropriate codes to medical diagnoses and procedures to ensure accurate billing and compliance. This position is essential for maintaining the quality and accuracy of health information management.

Responsibilities

  • Review medical record documentation and assign codes to medical diagnoses and procedures using appropriate coding classifications.
  • Sequence basic CPT procedure codes and modifiers based on medical record documentation in accordance with coding guidelines.
  • Utilize encoder software to review Ambulatory Payment Classifications and Enhanced Ambulatory Patient Groups assignments.
  • Research medical records for additional diagnoses to meet medical necessity.
  • Submit daily productivity reports to the HIM manager by defined deadlines.
  • Maintain HIM coding quality and productivity standards.
  • Attend educational meetings and seminars to maintain certification and continuing education requirements.
  • Conduct audits and coding reviews with healthcare professionals to ensure documentation accuracy.
  • Collaborate with billing departments to ensure all bills are satisfied and coding corrections are made as needed.
  • Communicate with insurance companies regarding coding errors and disputes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Certified Coding Associate (CCA) from AHIMA
  • One year of hospital-based outpatient coding experience or one year of diagnostic/procedural office coding experience with surgical coding experience.
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills and electronic medical record systems.
