About the position

The Medical Assistant is a vital role within our practice, serving as the first point of contact for patients and ensuring they feel welcomed and cared for. This position involves preparing patients for their evaluations by clinical providers, which includes obtaining and documenting vital signs, as well as gathering past medical and social histories. The Medical Assistant will also be responsible for updating electronic medical records (EMR) to ensure accurate patient information is available for the healthcare team. In addition to direct patient care, the Medical Assistant will assist professional nursing staff by performing various tasks such as taking temperatures, measuring pulse, conducting screenings, and monitoring blood pressure and respiration. The role requires maintaining the workflow of the practice, which includes organizing exam rooms, managing supplies, and screening patient requests. The Medical Assistant will also be involved in scheduling appointments, making reminder calls, and ensuring that patient interactions are handled with professionalism and courtesy. The position demands effective communication skills, both oral and written, to facilitate positive relationships with patients and staff. The Medical Assistant must prioritize their responsibilities, maintain confidentiality, and comply with legal requirements, including HIPAA and OSHA regulations. This role also includes administrative tasks such as answering phones, filing, and greeting patients, all while adhering to infection control and safety guidelines. The Medical Assistant is expected to enhance the practice's reputation by taking ownership of their responsibilities and exploring opportunities to add value to their work.

Responsibilities

  • Assist professional nursing staff by providing direct patient care.
  • Prepare charts and take vital signs including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiration.
  • Assist physicians by maintaining practice workflow and organizing exam rooms.
  • Screen patient requests and perform duties such as blood draws and POC testing as directed by the provider.
  • Follow instructions closely and report observations and symptoms indicative of the patient's reactions to treatments.
  • Ensure timely appointments and decrease wait times to see the provider.
  • Schedule initial evaluations, follow-up appointments, and cancellations accurately.
  • Initiate appointment reminder calls in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills to facilitate positive customer relationships and staff interaction.
  • Prioritize and complete duties accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate responsible judgment in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Obtain and enter patient history and chief complaints into the electronic medical record.
  • Maintain compliance with legal requirements, HIPAA, OSHA, and company policies.
  • Assist with office duties including answering phones, faxing, and filing.
  • Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock and placing orders.
  • Restock exam/procedure rooms as needed.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED with 10 years of medical office experience required.
  • Two-year degree from an accredited Medical Assistant program with certification preferred.
  • Familiarity with Patient Care practices.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Experience with EHR and EMR systems, preferably Athena.
  • Knowledge of pre-authorizations and referrals.
  • Certification in Medical Assisting to be obtained within 90 days of employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  • Experience in a primary care setting.
