About the position

SMS is seeking a Virtualization Engineer (VMWare/VDI) to support the Air Force Intranet Control Support (AFINC) enterprise operations. This role involves technical planning, design, development, integration, assessment, and requirements analysis to drive the design and maintenance of an IT Enterprise. The engineer will focus on customer-facing production systems infrastructure and will be responsible for leading the design, implementation, and management of VMware virtual environment infrastructure, with a concentration on storage technologies and Out-of-Band Management technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Support and design the VMware ESX infrastructure, systems, and network services in a data center environment.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and management of VMware virtual environment infrastructure.
  • Deploy and oversee Enterprise of Things (EoT) appliances and related technologies.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including design documents and standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of IT policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Stay updated with the latest VMware, virtual, OOBM, and storage technologies and trends.
  • Provide input and feedback for improvements and enhancements for the IT Enterprise.
  • Administratively manage a team, assigning tasks and ensuring project deadlines are met.
  • Provide periodic reports on system status, uptime, incidents, and problems.
  • Audit, remediate, and maintain security artifacts for DISA STIG and DoD SRG checklists.
  • Evaluate scan report data and participate in the Vulnerability Management Security lifecycle.
  • Support installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of server systems hardware.
  • Utilize technical solutions based on defined mission scope and approved software tools.
  • Ensure networks receive periodic updates from AFCYBER-released software patches and upgrades.
  • Assist AF Cyber personnel with Information Assurance Vulnerability Management programs.
  • Support customer requirements in a 24/7/365 IT enterprise operations environment.
  • Troubleshoot technology issues and document technical problems and resolutions.
  • Participate in testing and evaluation of new technologies.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in designing, implementing, and managing virtual and/or storage infrastructure.
  • Expert knowledge of VMware vSphere data center, vCenter Server Appliance, ESXi hypervisor, and related technologies.
  • Skilled with datastores, VM templates, snapshots, and enterprise tier 2 support for VM system owners.
  • Strong knowledge of Storage Area Networks (SAN) and related technologies.
  • Aptitude to test and interact with new software technologies in a monitoring environment.
  • Experience with server rack mounted hardware and related infrastructure devices.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills related to VMware and storage technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of scripting with PowerShell, VMware PowerCLI, and Bash.
  • Prior experience in a government consulting services environment is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Experience with third-party monitoring tools like Splunk and SolarWinds.
