About the position

The Visual/Data Journalist at Harvard University will play a crucial role in capturing and narrating stories of innovation and discovery across various channels, particularly the Harvard Gazette. This position emphasizes the production of data-driven stories, utilizing visuals to clarify complex topics and enhance storytelling. The journalist will collaborate with editors, designers, and other stakeholders to create impactful content that resonates with a broad audience.

Responsibilities

  • Research and write on a variety of topics, focusing on discoveries in science, health, and medicine.
  • Create compelling data-driven stories that explain and contextualize research findings.
  • Champion visually-driven storytelling and conceptualize content packages.
  • Collaborate with digital and creative teams to execute storytelling concepts.
  • Build relationships with researchers and staff to enhance research-driven storytelling.
  • Balance quick-turn data-driven stories with longer-term, in-depth projects.
  • Stay updated on current events and translate Harvard-related discoveries into engaging stories.

Requirements

  • Four or more years of relevant news writing and/or content creation experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in producing visual journalism, including charts and graphics.
  • Basic data visualization competency.
  • Experience with content creation using Wordpress or similar CMS.
  • BA/BS from an accredited institution.

Nice-to-haves

  • Strong storytelling skills and a keen sense of newsworthiness.
  • Experience with tools like Data Wrapper, Tableau, or Flourish.
  • Some front-end development experience.
  • Video and audio experience preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work across diverse groups.
