About the position

The Visual Information Specialist (Cartographer) position supports the Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff and the Joint Staff J2/J22 by conceptualizing and producing complex designs based on geospatial and analytical data. This role requires expertise in creating tailored visual products that effectively communicate information through maps and other visual indicators. The specialist will collaborate with various teams, mentor junior designers, and ensure the timely and accurate completion of projects.

Responsibilities

• Conceptualize and produce complex designs based on geospatial and analytical data.
• Create tailored visual products using maps, typography, color, and other visual indicators.
• Communicate clear guidance and instructions to designers and analysts on technical directions.
• Mentor other cartographers and graphic designers in visual storytelling and map-making abilities.
• Anticipate problems that may impede project completion and develop solutions.
• Work with interdisciplinary teams to support J2/DIA intelligence production.

Requirements

• 3-5 years of experience as a graphic designer/cartographer.
• Bachelor's degree or certification in geospatial information systems, graphic design, visual communications, geography, photogrammetry, geodesy, or a related field.
• Practical knowledge and extensive skills in preparing maps and visual materials for communication.
• Portfolio showcasing experience in cartography, infographics, and digital or print design.

Nice-to-haves

• In-depth knowledge of GIS tools (i.e., MaPublisher) and methodology.
• Strong communication skills to interact with clients and other designers.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines with minimal guidance.
