About the position

The Vivarium Supervisor at the University of Virginia's Center for Comparative Medicine is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the animal care unit. This role involves supervising animal care staff, ensuring compliance with various regulations, and coordinating animal husbandry activities. The supervisor works closely with veterinary staff to maintain animal health and welfare, while also providing training and ensuring the cleanliness and quality of the vivarium facilities.

Responsibilities

• Oversee Vivarium operations and report animal health and welfare concerns to veterinary staff.
• Supervise animal caregiver staff in accordance with University policies and federal guidelines.
• Assess staff performance, productivity, and adherence to procedures and policies.
• Train animal caregivers and scientific staff in appropriate practices and standard operating procedures.
• Schedule employees to ensure proper Vivarium coverage.
• Oversee rodent animal health surveillance programs and coordinate submission of samples with diagnostic labs.
• Ensure proper stock of animal care items and annual certification of HEPA filtered equipment.
• Administer all University and government policies related to Vivarium operations.
• Report matters of research non-compliance to the Office of Animal Welfare.
• Perform duties of Animal Caregivers as needed.

Requirements

• GED/High School Diploma required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Five years of related experience.
• LAT Certification through American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) required.
• Compliance with UVA Health Policy OCH-002 regarding vaccinations.
