About the position

The Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) position at the Texas Workforce Commission focuses on assisting individuals with disabilities in preparing for, obtaining, retaining, and advancing in competitive employment. This role is integral to the public vocational rehabilitation program, which aims to reduce the unemployment rate among people with disabilities. Responsibilities

  • Assist eligible individuals with disabilities to prepare for, retain, obtain and/or advance in competitive, integrated employment.
  • Develop and maintain relations with community referral sources, businesses, employers, and schools.
  • Collect and analyze information necessary to make accurate eligibility decisions.
  • Assist customers in choosing appropriate employment by analyzing their strengths, resources, priorities, concerns, abilities, capabilities, and interests.
  • Work with consumers to develop a plan of services designed to achieve their identified employment goals.
  • Ensure timely, cost-effective provision of services and monitor consumer progress toward their employment goals.
  • Develop and implement processes leading to successful job placement.
  • Apply best value purchasing practices and ensure effective use of public funds.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling or Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling from an accredited college or university; OR a master's degree in counseling or related fields with one year of related work experience; OR a master's degree in any other major with two years of related work experience; OR a bachelor's degree in vocational rehabilitation with one year of related work experience; OR a bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or Public Health with two years of related work experience; OR a bachelor's degree in any other major with three years of related work experience.
  • Experience as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor must meet the career ladder requirements of the agency.
