About the position

The Volunteer Legal Intern position at the USAO Northern District of Indiana offers law students an opportunity to gain practical experience in the federal legal system. Interns will engage in various legal tasks, including research, drafting documents, and assisting in trial preparations, while working under the supervision of Assistant U.S. Attorneys. This internship aims to develop legal skills and provide a comprehensive introduction to federal procedures in both civil and criminal contexts.

Responsibilities

  • Perform legal research and assist with research projects.
  • Draft legal documents including motions, pleadings, or briefs.
  • Assist in trial preparations.
  • Observe court proceedings.
  • Represent the government in routine hearings under supervision in limited instances.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or permanent allegiance to the United States.
  • Must be enrolled as a half-time student in good academic standing at an accredited law school.
  • Completion of at least one full semester at an accredited law school before the internship begins.
  • Ability to pass a background investigation and drug test.

Nice-to-haves

  • Preference for second and third-year law students.
