About the position

We have partnered with our real estate development client in their search for a VP Accounting & Finance. The VP of Accounting & Finance will play a crucial role in overseeing the financial accounting and reporting functions of the organization. This includes assisting in the closing of the books for all entities, reviewing ledgers and other records for appropriateness, and supervising the creation of financial statements and other reports. The VP will also serve as the primary contact for audit firms during engagements, assisting partners in the selection of audit firms and negotiating audit engagement agreements. They will draft or supervise the drafting of audited financial statements, ensuring timely delivery to appropriate recipients. In addition to financial reporting, the VP will be responsible for income tax planning and consultation, ensuring optimal tax treatment of transactions across all entities. They will maintain banking relationships, oversee cash positions, and manage cash distributions. The role also includes risk management responsibilities, such as maintaining the insurance program for the enterprise, selecting appropriate coverages, and ensuring compliance with partner and lender requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in GAAP accounting, with a minimum of 15 years of experience, including at least 4 years in public accounting. Strong leadership and supervisory skills are essential, as the VP will be responsible for guiding and training professional staff. This position offers the potential for advancement to CFO within two years, along with a supportive company culture that encourages community involvement and volunteerism.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in overseeing the closing of the books for all entities.
  • Review ledgers and other records for appropriateness.
  • Review the draws for funds under lending relationships, ensuring compliance with requirements.
  • Supervise, aid in or perform the creation of financial statements and other reports.
  • Assist Partners in the selection of audit firms.
  • Negotiate audit engagement agreements.
  • Serve as the primary contact for audit firms during the engagements.
  • Draft, or supervise drafting, of audited financial statements, including footnotes for auditors' review.
  • Ensure delivery of audited financial statements to appropriate recipients.
  • Consult on tax planning and structuring for all entities to ensure optimal tax treatment of transactions.
  • Maintain banking relationships with relevant banks, including opening and closing accounts, ensuring online access, remote deposit and other services.
  • Oversee cash positions of all entities, request additional funding when required and propose and accomplish cash distributions when appropriate.
  • Initiate wire transfers when needed (second approval by another).
  • Sign all checks, after reviewing all supporting documentation.
  • Maintain Insurance Program for the enterprise, including selecting appropriate coverages, negotiating policy terms and premiums and ensuring compliance with Partner and Lender requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with Accounting or Finance specialization.
  • MBA is a plus.
  • CPA certification.
  • Minimum 15+ years of GAAP accounting experience, most preferably with at least 4+ years of public accounting experience.
  • Background in tax.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills, including identifying and accomplishing needed guidance, training, corrective action and other supervisory functions for the professional staff.
