About the position

The Communications Surveillance Vice President role at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) is a pivotal position within the Compliance Communications Surveillance function. Reporting directly to the Lead of Transformation, Audit, and Reporting, this role is essential for the development, deployment, and maintenance of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and other model-based capabilities that are integral to the Communications Surveillance Program. The Vice President will act as a change agent, collaborating with various departments within the Americas Division, including Technology, Compliance Analytics, and Model Risk and Validation, to utilize advanced techniques for processing, analyzing, and managing data sets that are subject to monitoring. In addition to overseeing the technical aspects of NLP implementation, the Communications Surveillance Vice President will be responsible for selecting vendor solutions that enhance the detection of misconduct. This includes developing and maintaining controls related to the existing communications program, ensuring that SMBC employs the most effective technology to identify and mitigate risks by recognizing new behavioral trends and reducing false positives. The role also involves creating strategies to address false positives, enhancing risk detection in communications surveillance, and ensuring that Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are met by all upstream partners concerning NLP deliverables. Furthermore, the Vice President will prepare metrics and reports for management and stakeholders to evaluate the effectiveness of NLP within the communications surveillance framework.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee development, deployment, and maintenance of NLP in the Communications Surveillance program.
  • Create strategy for addressing false positives and enhancing detection of risks in communications surveillance.
  • Ensure that Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are maintained and achieved from all upstream partners regarding NLP deliverables.
  • Prepare metrics and reporting for management and stakeholders regarding the applicability and effectiveness of NLP in the communications surveillance program.
  • Partner with Technology on developing plans, requirements, testing, implementation, and maintenance of technology solutions.
  • Collaborate with the Model Risk Team for request submission for review and approval of the use of NLP.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 5-8 years of experience in either legal or the financial industry.
  • Experience developing, deploying, and maintaining innovative processes, methodologies, and technologies for electronic legal discovery or communications surveillance.
  • Experience developing, training, and deploying models.
  • High level of comfort with technology solutions related to electronic legal discovery or communications surveillance.
