About the position

The VP of Controllership - Accounting Policy at Synchrony is a senior role responsible for providing technical accounting guidance and ensuring compliance with US GAAP and company policies. This position involves regular interaction with senior leaders and requires expertise in accounting policy, technical accounting advisory, and regulatory compliance. The role supports various financial activities, including business development, acquisitions, and SEC filings, while also leading the implementation of new accounting standards.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical accounting guidance for Synchrony Financial, including support for business development activities, financing transactions, acquisitions, and deal structuring.
  • Develops and maintains consistency across accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with US GAAP/Synchrony accounting policies and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Provides advice and interpretation regarding accounting, disclosure, and financial considerations.
  • Monitors external accounting and regulatory developments that may impact Synchrony Financial.
  • Leads the implementation of new accounting standards, collaborating with industry groups, regulators, and external auditors.
  • Assists in the review of quarterly and annual SEC and regulatory filings, including management review meetings and supplemental financial reporting schedules.
  • Works with platform finance teams and accounting operational teams on new or amended contracts and client issues.
  • Performs other duties and/or special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 10 years combined public and corporate technical accounting/policy experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in public accounting.
  • Minimum of 5 years accounting policy/technical accounting advisory experience.
  • CPA Certification is required.
  • Ability to research and analyze relevant facts to formulate technical accounting positions considering GAAP, SEC, and regulatory guidance.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing and communicating at all levels across the business.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a technical accounting role in the financial services industry.
  • Credit Card industry experience.
  • Ability to proactively identify root causes of issues and design process changes to minimize/eliminate re-occurrences.
  • Highly articulate and confident presenter and communicator (oral and written).
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
