About the position

We are seeking a dynamic and visionary VP, Data Engineering to join our team. This is a rare opportunity to step into a senior level leadership role that is critical to shaping the future of our data and related technology platforms, and driving cross-functional collaboration across the company. You will be a leader, a mentor, and a motivator, working with data-engineering and data-science leads from across the company to tackle the hardest and most exciting challenges in the insurance industry. As a VP, Data Engineering, you will drive growth and transformation of our data & analytics landscape. In this role, you will oversee teams designing, building and integrating data solutions/platforms that capture, explore, transform and utilize data and enable delivery of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and business intelligence/insights capabilities. You will also be leading the Data Engineering Chapter/Community throughout Travelers, leading the definition and adoption of engineering best practices, overseeing skills transformation, and leading simplification & modernization of technology assets and platforms in the data & analytics space - which includes growing and adopting our Cloud-based capabilities for ongoing Data & Analytics capabilities. You will define and drive delivery of the long-term strategy related to data and related technology platforms - including our data lake, data warehouses, analytics & modeling platforms, and our business insights delivery tools. Setting the data engineering strategy to ensure secure, well-supported and scalable solutions is essential, as is aligning data strategies and consumption patterns with enterprise architecture standards, platforms, and application infrastructure teams. Staying ahead of the curve on emerging technologies and industry trends, continuously improving our data and technology platforms is a key responsibility. You will champion the development of best practices and standards for data engineering and technology platforms, guiding data engineering leaders to advance their subject matter expertise and to develop future leaders to meet Travelers' business objectives. Directly leading and mentoring data technology and engineering support and development teams for enterprise assets is crucial, as is collaborating with data engineering leads from across the company to drive cross-functional initiatives, including skills transformation, simplification, and modernization of data & analytics technology platforms, and driving quality and standardization of our data engineering tools and patterns. Mentoring and motivating data engineering teams to achieve their full potential and take on challenging projects is a vital part of this role. You will present recommendations to executives and negotiate and influence executive leadership decisions. Additionally, overseeing and directing the development of functional business plans with direct impact on company revenue, expense, and growth is expected. Acting as a "trusted advisor" across the company and being recognized as an external expert will be part of your responsibilities. You will directly lead enterprise budgets while influencing and coordinating data engineering and related technology investments across Travelers, and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in a senior leadership role in data engineering or related fields.
  • Strong understanding of data solutions, platforms, and analytics.
  • Experience with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies.

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills with executive leadership.
  • Experience in budget management and financial oversight.
