About the position

The VP, Direct Response is a leadership role focused on helping progressive causes achieve sustainable growth through effective direct response programs. This position involves managing a nonprofit client portfolio, setting growth plans, ensuring execution across various channels, and enhancing partnerships. The role requires collaboration with a diverse team of experts to drive results and improve account management practices.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a significant portion of the nonprofit business, directing all aspects of direct response campaigns including direct mail, email/SMS, and paid media.
  • Serve as a senior point of contact for a portfolio of clients, ensuring expectations are met and leveraging client satisfaction for future opportunities.
  • Lead a cross-discipline team to develop best-in-class direct mail and digital campaigns.
  • Ensure overall campaign quality, timelines, and accuracy of deliverables, including multi-channel testing plans and campaign reports.
  • Lead client and internal brainstorms, meetings, presentations, and program development workshops.
  • Provide technical, creative, and strategic oversight across all offerings to ensure high-quality work products.
  • Develop multi-channel strategies that address client objectives and create action-oriented planning documents.
  • Forge strong relationships with vendors and tools in the direct response space, recommending promising partners and innovations.
  • Craft and pitch new business and represent Blue State through event participation and thought leadership.
  • Focus on the continued development of the Account Management craft, mentoring staff across teams.

Requirements

  • 10+ years experience in client services, digital marketing, direct mail, fundraising, or a related area.
  • Deep knowledge of direct response fundraising with experience leading online and offline programs and a proven track record of driving revenue.
  • Experience in selling and leading business development proposal and pitch processes.
  • Some technical experience or willingness to learn to communicate about Blue State's products and capabilities.
  • Ability to adapt to new situations, think on your feet, and communicate effectively with others.
  • Experience in leading and mentoring teams, open to feedback and learning from others.
  • A shared passion for making change and redefining business practices, with a commitment to quality.
