About the position

The Vice President, Senior Software Development Engineering Manager at Synchrony is responsible for leading a large team of engineers in the architecture, design, building, and testing of mission-critical applications. This role requires deep expertise in software engineering and microservice architecture, along with the ability to manage and influence a diverse team. The successful candidate will oversee the engineering delivery of the Synapps credit underwriting system, ensuring compliance with architectural standards and driving application modernization efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a large team of software engineers, including managing managers.
  • Influence and lead multiple agile teams through all phases of the Agile development life cycle using Large Solution SAFE.
  • Implement new technologies and assist developers in migrating to these technologies.
  • Establish application architecture standards and best practices for Java microservices.
  • Collaborate with software developers, product managers, application architects, and customer application experts to create applications.
  • Mentor and influence team members at all levels, providing direction and support.
  • Ensure compliance with architecture, security, and technology standards set by Synchrony Financial.
  • Assist in crafting and maintaining the future state technology architectural strategy and application modernization roadmap.
  • Ensure application code quality through development, testing, and QA processes.
  • Participate in addressing root cause analyses and incident reports, providing direction in problem resolution.
  • Analyze production defects, troubleshoot systems, identify root causes, and implement fixes.
  • Provide 24x7 on-call support periodically throughout the year.
  • Identify ways to increase efficiency and improve system performance.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in software engineering.
  • A minimum of 3 years of people management experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of credit underwriting technology experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the Synapps engineering environment.
  • Solid people management skills, including performance monitoring and staff motivation.
  • Experience with continuous integration environments.
  • Experience writing unit, integration, and UI test cases.
  • Strong experience with Pivotal Cloud Foundry.
  • Experience using Splunk for production support.
  • Familiarity with JSON, REST, and XML-based web services.
  • Excellence in technical communication with both technical and non-technical peers.
  • Strong cross-functional team player with the ability to work across a matrix organization.
  • Desire to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience developing and supporting financial/banking applications.
