About the position

The VR Hardware Systems Engineering Lead is a pivotal technical leadership role at Meta, responsible for driving innovation and overseeing the entire new product development cycle for virtual reality (VR) devices. This role requires a deep understanding of hardware systems and the ability to collaborate effectively with various cross-functional teams, including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, display, optics, system architecture, systems engineering, product management, industrial design, XRTech, software manufacturing, and operations. The individual in this position will work directly under the Head of Hardware, ensuring that all phases of engineering design, development, and validation are executed to bring complex VR products to mass production. In this role, the VR Hardware Systems Engineering Lead will establish strategic relationships with product peers across engineering, research, business, design, and user research teams to define product requirements and architecture. They will provide technical ownership and guidance, making crucial hardware product decisions that enable the realization of cutting-edge VR devices for Meta's users. The position demands effective collaboration across all levels of management and individual contributors, both internally and externally, to drive business results, optimize overall business objectives, and foster an environment of collaboration and innovation. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successfully shipping products, demonstrating technical depth, and possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills. This role is essential for ensuring that Meta continues to lead in the development of immersive technologies that enhance social connectivity and user experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead hardware and technology teams through all phases of engineering design, development, and validation to bring complex VR products to mass production.
  • Establish strategic relationships with product peers in engineering, research, business, design, and user research teams to define product requirements and architecture.
  • Provide technical ownership and guidance to make crucial hardware product decisions, enabling the realization of cutting-edge VR devices for Meta's users.
  • Collaborate effectively across all levels of management and individual contributors both internally and externally.
  • Drive business results, optimize overall business objectives, and foster an environment of collaboration and innovation.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in hardware product development, with a proven track record of successfully shipping products to market.
  • Experience with multiple full life-cycle product launches.
  • Proven technical expertise in one of the following hardware disciplines: electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, display, optics, and systems engineering.
  • Proven leadership skills, demonstrating the experience to lead cross-functional hardware and technology teams throughout the entire product development cycle.
  • Effective communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts and drive alignment on product requirements and architecture.

Nice-to-haves

  • 15+ years of direct relevant experience
  • Previous AR/VR or wearables experience
  • Previous display and optics experience
  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
