The Waived Testing/Phlebotomy Technician will work independently at all remote sites to obtain blood and urine specimens from patients of all ages, from newborns to geriatrics, using appropriate techniques. This role requires the technician to be trained and qualified to perform waived testing per protocol and accurately record patient results and quality control data. The technician will coordinate and obtain blood samples utilizing various devices, ensuring that the correct collection container and preservative are used. Routine venipuncture, blood cultures, and capillary blood gases must be performed in accordance with institutional policies, and appropriate skin disinfectants must be utilized to ensure test results are not compromised. In addition to specimen collection, the technician will be responsible for properly processing specimens after phlebotomy to maintain their integrity. This includes centrifuging, separating, or freezing specimens as necessary. The technician will also use the Laboratory Information System to order tests, print bar code labels, and fax results. Waived testing will be performed according to manufacturer and laboratory procedures for various tests, including sodium, potassium, glucose, and Rapid HIV, among others. Quality control materials must be analyzed and recorded prior to patient testing, and any unacceptable quality control data must be addressed immediately. The technician will maintain organized quality control records, perform routine quality assurance surveys at off-site draw stations, and inventory supplies at various drawing stations. They will also ensure that all tests sent to outside reference labs are handled appropriately to protect specimen integrity. The role requires excellent communication skills, the ability to educate patients about procedures, and the capacity to work independently while interacting with patients of all ages. The technician will also assist with obtaining appropriate diagnosis codes from physicians and perform other duties as assigned.
