About the position

The Lead Continuous Improvement Engineer position at Ryder is a pivotal role within our Supply Chain Solutions division, aimed at fostering a culture of continuous improvement across the organization. This remote position can be based in Buckner, KY, Columbia, SC, or Fort Worth, TX. The successful candidate will be responsible for applying continuous improvement methodologies to enhance both new and existing operations. This role is designed for a proactive individual who can identify, lead, and drive change through data-driven continuous improvement, engineering, and automation efforts. The ultimate goal is to achieve higher performance levels in safety, quality, delivery, cost, and growth. In this high-influence position, the Lead Engineer will leverage data analytics and engineering methodologies to identify root causes of operational issues and implement effective solutions. The role requires a strong ability to interface with employees at all levels and functions within the operation, ensuring that continuous improvement initiatives are effectively communicated and executed. The Lead Engineer may also manage continuous improvement resources and will report directly to the Continuous Improvement Manager or Senior Continuous Improvement Manager, while closely collaborating with a General Manager or Director of Operations. Key responsibilities include collecting and analyzing data, mapping and documenting processes, identifying process gaps, and recommending improvements. The Lead Engineer will develop and execute comprehensive continuous improvement plans that drive value for customers and lead high-impact projects that yield tangible improvements in key business metrics. Additionally, the role involves supporting start-ups, retrofits, and expansions, as well as identifying and supporting automation projects. The Lead Engineer will also coach employees in the use of lean methods and ensure that continuous improvement principles are integrated into daily operations.

Responsibilities

  • Collect data and perform statistical analysis.
  • Map and document processes.
  • Independently identify process gaps and recommend improvements.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive continuous improvement plan.
  • Drive process improvement activities to achieve tangible improvements in safety, quality, delivery, cost, and employee development.
  • Manage and complete high-impact continuous improvement projects across the operation.
  • Assess continuous improvement initiatives and provide recommendations for future activities.
  • Support start-ups, retrofits, and expansions including pricing inputs and certifications.
  • Identify and support automation projects.
  • Regularly interact with account management and customers.
  • Demonstrate competency in engineering methods, lean tools, and quality standards.
  • Coach employees in the use and implementation of continuous improvement and quality assurance principles.
  • Apply engineering methodologies/tools to improve operations.
  • Supervise continuous improvement engineering and quality professionals as needed.
  • Facilitate and execute Value Stream Maps and Kaizen Events.
  • Provide regular reports of data and actions to measure progress against site objectives.
  • Make inventory and supply chain strategy recommendations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or Supply Chain and seven (7) years of related work experience in Warehousing, Transportation, or Manufacturing; or a Master's degree in Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or Supply Chain Management with five (5) years of related experience.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Advanced understanding and experience in core engineering and data analysis functions such as slotting, utilization, labor planning, layouts, and metrics.
  • Proficiency in developing and managing Leader Standard Work, Visual Management Systems, and Management Accountability Systems.
  • Intermediate proficiency in data visualization tools (PowerBI, Tableau) and database programming (SQL, DAX).
  • Knowledge of Warehouse Management operations, data analytics, and Lean methods.

Nice-to-haves

  • Intermediate proficiency in data visualization tools (PowerBI, Tableau) and database programming (SQL, DAX).
  • Knowledge of material handling solutions and automation types such as powered industrial truck applications, racking designs, and conveyor systems.
  • Experience with Transportation Design Tools and Mapping Software.
