About the position

The Lead Continuous Improvement Engineer at Ryder plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture of continuous improvement across the organization. This position is designed for an individual who is passionate about applying continuous improvement methodologies to enhance both new and existing operations. The Lead Engineer will be responsible for identifying, leading, and driving change within the operation through data-driven continuous improvement, engineering, and automation efforts. The ultimate goal is to achieve higher levels of performance in safety, quality, delivery, cost, and growth. This role requires effective utilization of data analytics, engineering methodologies, and Ryder's lean tools to facilitate root cause identification and elimination. In this high-influence position, the Lead Engineer will interact with employees at all levels and functions within the operation. The role may involve managing continuous improvement resources and will report directly to the Continuous Improvement Manager or Senior Continuous Improvement Manager, while also being closely aligned with a General Manager or Director of Operations. The Lead Engineer will collect data, perform statistical analyses, map and document processes, and independently identify process gaps, recommending and implementing necessary improvements. A thorough and effective continuous improvement plan will be developed to drive value for customers, focusing on key business metrics such as safety, quality, delivery, cost, and employee development. The Lead Engineer will manage and complete high-impact continuous improvement projects that lead to improved business results. This includes assessing continuous improvement initiatives and providing input and recommendations for future activities. The role will also support start-ups, retrofits, and expansions, including pricing inputs, go-live, and steady-state certifications. Additionally, the Lead Engineer will identify and support automation projects, regularly interacting with account management and customers to ensure alignment and success. A significant aspect of this role involves demonstrating a high level of competency in a wide range of engineering methods, lean tools, and quality standards. The Lead Engineer will coach employees in the use and implementation of continuous improvement, quality assurance, and lean principles. This includes applying engineering methodologies and tools such as product slotting, labor standards studies, layout optimization, data profiling, and resource modeling to enhance distribution and transportation operations. The position may also involve supervising continuous improvement engineering and quality professionals, participating in employment decisions, and managing performance.

Responsibilities

  • Collect data and perform statistical analysis to identify process gaps.
  • Map and document processes to recommend and implement improvements.
  • Develop and execute a continuous improvement plan to drive value for customers.
  • Manage and complete high-impact continuous improvement projects across the operation.
  • Support start-ups, retrofits, and expansions including pricing inputs and certifications.
  • Identify and support automation projects to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Coach employees in the use of continuous improvement, quality assurance, and lean principles.
  • Facilitate and execute Value Stream Maps and Kaizen Events.
  • Provide regular reports of data and actions to measure progress against site objectives.
  • Design, implement, monitor, and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Support regulatory compliance and certification requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or Supply Chain and seven years of related work experience; or a Master's degree in Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or Supply Chain Management and five years of related experience.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Advanced understanding of core engineering and data analysis functions such as slotting, utilization, labor planning, and layouts.
  • Proficiency in developing and managing Leader Standard Work, Visual Management Systems, and Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodologies.
  • Knowledge of Warehouse Management operations, data analytics, and Lean methods.

Nice-to-haves

  • Intermediate skills in data visualization tools such as PowerBI and Tableau.
  • Intermediate knowledge of database programming (SQL, DAX, etc.).
  • Advanced knowledge of warehouse design tools such as AutoCAD and slotting software.
  • Knowledge of material handling solutions and automation types.
  • Familiarity with transportation design tools and mapping software.
