About the position

The Lead Engineer position at Ryder is pivotal in supporting the company's Continuous Improvement (CI) culture across various business operations. This role is designed for an individual who can actively apply continuous improvement methodologies to enhance both new and existing operations. The Lead Engineer will be responsible for identifying, leading, and driving change within the operation through data-driven CI, engineering, and automation efforts. The ultimate goal is to achieve higher performance levels in safety, quality, delivery, cost, and growth. In this high-influence role, the Lead Engineer will leverage data analytics, engineering methodologies, and Ryder's lean tools to facilitate root cause identification and elimination. The position requires regular interaction with employees at all levels and functions within the operation, ensuring that CI initiatives are effectively communicated and implemented. The Lead Engineer may also manage CI resources and will report directly to the CI Manager or Senior CI Manager, while closely collaborating with a General Manager or Director of Operations. Key responsibilities include collecting data and performing statistical analysis, mapping and documenting processes, and independently identifying process gaps. The Lead Engineer will recommend and implement process improvements, develop comprehensive continuous improvement plans, and drive activities that lead to tangible improvements in key business metrics. Additionally, the role involves managing high-impact CI projects, supporting start-ups and expansions, and identifying automation projects. The Lead Engineer will also coach employees in the use of CI, Quality Assurance, and Lean principles, ensuring that the organization continuously strives for operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Collect data and perform statistical analysis.
  • Map and document processes.
  • Independently identify process gaps and recommend improvements.
  • Develop and execute a continuous improvement plan to drive customer value.
  • Drive process improvement activities to enhance safety, quality, delivery, cost, and employee development.
  • Manage and complete high-impact CI projects across the operation.
  • Assess CI initiatives and provide recommendations for future activities.
  • Support start-ups, retrofits, and expansions, including pricing inputs and certifications.
  • Identify and support automation projects.
  • Regularly interact with account management and customers.
  • Coach employees in the use and implementation of CI, Quality Assurance, and Lean principles.
  • Facilitate and execute Value Stream Maps and Kaizen Events.
  • Provide regular reports on data and actions to measure progress against site objectives.
  • Make inventory and supply chain strategy recommendations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or Supply Chain and seven years of related work experience in Warehousing, Transportation, or Manufacturing; or a Master's degree in Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or Supply Chain Management with five years of related experience.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Advanced understanding and experience in core engineering and data analysis functions such as slotting, utilization, labor planning, layouts, and metrics.
  • Proficiency in developing and managing Leader Standard Work, Visual Management Systems, and Management Accountability Systems.
  • Intermediate proficiency in data visualization tools (PowerBI, Tableau) and database programming (SQL, DAX).
  • Knowledge of Warehouse Management operations, data analytics, and Lean methods.
