About the position

The Waste Industry Controller will oversee financial management for multiple facilities within a designated region. This role involves a comprehensive range of responsibilities including general accounting, financial reporting, budget development, and analysis of financial performance. The Controller will act as a business partner to regional leaders, ensuring compliance with accounting principles and enhancing profitability through insightful financial analyses and strategic recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the financial affairs of the region in collaboration with regional business leaders and corporate leaders.
  • Manage monthly accounting close, financial reporting, analysis, and general accounting activities.
  • Consult with RVP and managers on financial performance aspects including costs, pricing, and margin analysis.
  • Perform timely analyses and appraise management on operating results regarding costs, budgets, and profit improvements.
  • Analyze trends and deviations from budget plans, monitor spending, cash flow, and ROI, and recommend corrections to enhance profitability.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting principles, corporate finance policies, and internal control processes.
  • Coordinate the preparation and analysis of financial data for periodic and annual financial statements.
  • Organize and implement the annual budget process and maintain operating and capital budgets.
  • Provide tax, insurance, and other reports required by governmental regulations.
  • Review and interpret financial and budgetary reports for management decision-making.
  • Ensure accurate accounting and consolidation of regional revenues, expenditures, assets, and inventory.
  • Utilize financial/accounting automation tools to prepare and share data.
  • Develop short and long-term plans for budgets, business plans, and cost controls.
  • Select, evaluate, and coach direct reports for efficient operation of the function.
  • Ensure integrity of transaction reporting and reconciliation of balance sheets monthly.
  • Communicate with external auditors on financial matters and handle audit responses.
  • Coordinate activities for transaction processing, financial reporting, and budgeting.
  • Support sales efforts with profitability and pricing analyses for RFP responses.
  • Participate in merger/acquisition due diligence and post-closing integration.
  • Identify and implement cost reduction and profit improvement strategies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in financial management or accounting roles.
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with financial reporting and analysis.
  • Proficiency in financial/accounting software and automation tools.
