About the position

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Lab Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the water quality and performance of the Water Treatment Center and Wastewater Treatment Facility. This position involves sampling, testing, and documenting water quality, while also engaging in community outreach and education regarding water regulations. The technician must possess strong communication, organizational, technical, mechanical, and public relations skills to effectively perform their duties.

Responsibilities

  • Perform compliance monitoring analysis on collected wastewater samples using approved methodology.
  • Collect and analyze daily water samples from the Water Treatment Center for process control.
  • Collect composite samples and grab samples from permitted industries using portable samplers.
  • Collect total coliform samples each month for shipment to KDHE laboratory.
  • Collect water samples for compliance and analyze Fun Valley lagoons quarterly.
  • Perform inspections of construction sites for compliance with storm water pollution prevention plans.
  • Prepare reports of findings and corrective actions, and perform follow-up investigations.
  • Participate in community outreach and education programs concerning storm water regulations and water education.
  • Maintain and update records on sampling and testing results; input data into computer spreadsheets.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory areas and equipment, including samplers and autoclaves.
  • Perform microbiological testing on water and wastewater samples and document quality control analysis.
  • Respond to telemetry system alarms and assist with industrial inspections.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED, and a technical degree or some college credit in biology, chemistry, or related field is required.
  • Minimum of one year of similar or related experience is required.
  • Must be able to obtain a Class I Kansas Wastewater Operator Certification and a Class I Wastewater Laboratory Technician Certification within one year of employment.
  • Possess a valid Kansas Driver's License.
