About the position

The City of Easthampton is seeking to fill the position of Water Craftsperson within its Department of Public Works. This role is essential for the installation, maintenance, and servicing of the city’s water system. The Water Craftsperson will be responsible for operating and maintaining equipment used in testing the city's water supply, as well as managing the operations of the city pumping station. This position requires a combination of skilled technical work and manual labor, ensuring that the water system functions efficiently and meets safety standards. The Water Craftsperson will perform a variety of tasks including locating and repairing water mains, laying water pipes, and ensuring that joints are properly sealed. The individual will also be tasked with monitoring pumping stations, reading and recording instrument readings to ensure proper operation, and sampling drinking water to ensure the quality and safety of the municipal water supply. Additionally, the role involves installing, repairing, and replacing fire hydrants and water meters, as well as collecting data and maintaining records in compliance with local and state requirements. This full-time position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week, with a salary range of $25.30 to $26.58 per hour. The Water Craftsperson will work Monday to Friday, with the possibility of overtime and weekend work as needed. The role is vital for maintaining the integrity of the city’s water supply and ensuring that all operations comply with relevant regulations and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, and services the water system.
  • Locates and repairs water mains.
  • Lays water pipe, ensuring joints are properly sealed and the trench is properly prepared and backfilled.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces old lines.
  • Monitors pumping stations and reads instrument readings to ensure proper operation.
  • Monitors the municipal water supply.
  • Performs sampling of drinking water to ensure quality and safety.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces fire hydrants.
  • Installs, reads, repairs, and replaces water meters.
  • Collects data and maintains records in compliance with local and state requirements.
  • Performs similar or related work as required.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One or more years of related work experience or technical training to perform assigned duties at the journeyman level.
  • Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver's License (Required).
  • OSHA 10 Certification (Preferred).
  • Massachusetts Class 2A Hoisting Engineer's License (Preferred).
  • Massachusetts Water Distribution License Grade 1 (Preferred).
  • Massachusetts Water Treatment License Grade 1 (Preferred).
